Commissioned Heroes

This is a recent commissioned piece I drew up for a nice fellow who asked for Green Lantern or Doctor Fate. I threw in Superman and the Flash for the extra "Superfriends" feel, but being the geek I am, I decided to draw the old "earth-2" Superman (fellow geeks will get it). I think I just like the idea of drawing Superman with grey hair.

Anyway, the drawing was done is markers and then scanned and cleaned-up in photoshop. The original colour was green (surprise), but I changed it up for variety's sake. Below is the original small pencil rough.

Turned out great! I love seeing Superman with the older "S" and I am a huge Dr. Fate fan. Awesome!

just wondering...when you get commissioned to do such illustrations, do you have to clear anything on the copyright side with DC comics since you're getting paid to draw a character that is copyright protected.

check out my newest 'michael cho' style in two tone monochrome:

Wow, this looks terrific, Mike!

I'm so tempted to steal those pencils and ink a version, but you've done such a beautiful job on it, I'm afraid it would just be superfluous.

Still, I'd love to ink some of your work... =)

Best,
Rich

You suck.

Great meeting you... thanks for letting me peruse your fab portfolio book. I hope we get to meet again under more relaxed constraints.

Hi, I loved Dr. Fate when I was a kid, I don't even think I knew who he was but he was my favorite Super Powers action figure! I found your drawings very inspiring as an artist, great stuff!

Thanks everyone, for the very nice comments!

Leland: Usually the big comic companies don't mind if you do commissions of their characters. Nice 2-tone work!

Thanks Rich! It'd be cool to have you ink stuff by me!

Thanks, Stuart! It was great meeting you too.
