I had an unexpected evening off work recently, so I found a couple of hours to do this quick painting of everyone's favourite superheroine-next-door, Mary Marvel. I've always dug the Marvel Family of heroes ever since I was 6 years old and saw the old "Shazam!" cartoon on TV. Since I had a little extra time, this one was painted old-school style with gouache on water-colour paper. The benefit of working in gouache (as opposed to my regular marker method) is that the colours go on so flat and clean that it requires very little photoshop cleanup after it's painted. You can compare the final to the rough pencil sketch on the right.

What a great piece, sir! It makes me smile:)
Great Stuff! We need to enjoy our untainted memories of Mary while we can.
Truly gorgeous! The pencil sketch is amazing, too!
And it definitely makes me smile, too, that's for sure...
Awesome! She's so perky and wholesome.
Chris: thanks, buddy. I'm totally digging the SD convention book drawings on your blog too.
Joel: Nooooo!!! Its true -- everything you love in comics will eventually be raped or shot through the throat. Incidentally, I was actually gonna write in my post how Mary Marvel has still managed to remain relatively untainted by all the ugliness that's going on in recent comics. But now....gaaaaahhh!
Bill: thanks, Bill! Glad it brought you a smile.
Jason: yeah -- wholesome and perky is exactly how I think of Mary Marvel.
Looks cool, and I dig the ferns in the background!
Hey, Michael, that's really well done! I like gouache also, though it is a very difficult medium to work for portraiture. I enjoy the challenge anyway. Keep up the great work.
amazing! very cool.
Holey Moley, that's terrific!
I bet you do a mean Freddy Freeman!
Yeah...that's pretty damn hot.
=s=
Just perfect, Mike!
Stovepipe.net: thanks, dude! I always enjoy drawing those ferns -- its a fun pattern to draw with my brush.
Mike: thanks, Mike. I agree that guoache is a diffcult medium -- hence why I try to keep modelling and colour-mixing to a minimum when I use it. Its too damn unforgiving, but when it works, the results are worth it.
Onesickindividual: Thank you!
Frank: Thanks, Frank --always good to hear from you! Freddy Freeman, huh? Hmmm....now that's a thought...
Shane: Thanks, Shane -- always a treat to know my work meets with your approval!
Don van Horn: hey, Don! Nice to hear from you again -- glad you liked the drawing.
Outstanding, Michael.
What I like best about this one are the three thick strokes on her cape. Simple, yet effective.
Thanks, Anthony. The cape was fun to draw.
That's nice.
thanks, Sleestak -- nice avatar/icon you got!
Well done, sir! She's a beaut...and what great technique!
Thanks, Rob! Nice to hear from you again.
Great work! Reflects much of what I feel about Mary Marvel. She's been one of my favourites for around 60 years and I recently dedicated a web site (www.marymarvel.co.uk) to her.
Thanks, Brian! Glad you liked the drawing.
So awesome. I love that it's hand-painted too. You should sell these!
Roque: thanks! I enjoy doing things old-school by painting them in gouache. And yeah, I did sell this one to a collector who asked for a Mary Marvel commission.
Wonderful painting! I love guache because it has the fluidity of watercolors but the flatness of acrylic.
And now it looks like the "good" Mary had returned, stronger than ever, just like I predicted!
