Kirby's OMAC

OMAC actually stands for One Man Army Corps, but to me he's just One More Awesome Character created by Jack Kirby. Really, you can't go wrong with a superhero who wears a mohawk and sideburns!

I penciled this one during an afternoon as a warmup, put it in a drawer, then pulled it out and inked it one evening when I had some spare time. As you might tell, I was doing my best to unleash my "inner Kirby" while working on it. And since I don't work much in full colour anymore, I thought it might be fun to take a crack at colouring it and adding some tones in photoshop. As with a lot of my recent posts, you can see the original pencil drawing for it below.

Hey Mike!

Awesome OMAC illustration! I have been a bid fan of OMAC since reading the original Kirby issues when they came out so long ago. Very cool, and a great homage to Kirby. Nicely done.

That is so great! I love me some Kirby, and love your spin on all things Kirby. Hopefully I'll et the sketch of Orion you did up on my blog soon.

That's awesome Mike! As I said on drawingboard, love the drawing, inks and colors. After seeing the original pencils though, one thing I can say is that OMAC pops out more in the pencils 'cause of the greater contrast when comparing the pencils to the finished art.
But hell, I'm no colourist so take that with a grain of salt! haha

Dave: thanks, Dave! Nice to hear from you, buddy. I knew you'd be a big OMAC fan -- we're so much alike!

Joel: thanks, Joel! You know, I doodle 4th world characters ALL the time. The Bug and Orion are two of my all time Kirby faves. Maybe I'll post some more of them in the future. Or you can email me and I'll send em to you.

RLS: thanks, Ron. Hmm...you might be right on that colour thing. The drawing does pop more in the pencils, but that's also cause the bg is a bit lighter in the rendering in pencil. I thought I'd make it black in the inks. I tried lightening the figure originally in colour, but then it looked a bit too cartoony and bright, so I toned it down and made him darker.

Insanely cool. As usual.

Paul: thanks, Paul. To me though, all of Marvel Comics is a Kirby-themed anthology...hahah. Seriously, if someone did put one together, though, you'd have to be in it too.

Jeremy: hey, Jeremy! Thanks for stopping by.

Great Omac, Mike. I've always liked the look of the character. The mohawk and everything. Nice Kirby style happening there!

Thanks, Mike! Glad you liked it. I discovered OMAC pretty late in my Kirby-reading, but once I read that crazy first issue, I was HOOKED. I just wish Kirby did a longer run on that book - some of those concepts he came up with were mind-blowingly crazy.

If you've got more 4th World sketches around you've got to post them. So that we may all bask in their greatness.

Hmmm...I emailed a couple to Joel, so you might wanna check on his blog to see em. But I have a few more that I'll have to scan and post up sometime. You KNOW I dig drawing Kirby characters, and the New Gods is my all-time favourite Kirby stuff. As for my all-time fav. character? He's at:

Great work Michael. I love your Kirby stuff. Keep it comin'!

Thanks, Jason! I'll try and post more stuff later. I often ink Kirby pages for fun and as a warmup. And whenever I draw Kirby-created heroes, I always end up doing them kinda Kirby style...
