Free Comic Book Day...

...has come and gone! Yup, for those who missed it, it was Saturday, May 5th. For my part, I spent it at the fine Toronto comicshop The Beguiling, signing books and doing free sketches for anyone who wanted one (Spider-man and Venom seemed the most popular requests). The weather was great, the turnout was even better and I had such a good time drawing in the sun that I got a farmer's tan. Thanks to everyone who came out and looked for me (hey, Doodlers!) -- I hope you all had a good time and got some nice comics to take home.

Below is my contribution to one of the fine books being offered for FCBD, the excellent Comics Festival comic. Its a one-pager, written by Brian Mclachlan, pencilled by me and inked by Darwyn Cooke. I've posted it here in black and white, but its printed in full colour in the free comic -- maybe that will make you hunt down a copy!

Incidentally, this is the 2nd year that the three of us have collaborated on a page for the Comics Festival book. You can check out our previous effort in an older post from my blog here.

Paul: thanks, dude! I think you can still get the book from the Beguiling if your local shop isn't carrying it. Have you tried emailing them?

Drazen: hey, Drazen! yeah, it woulda been nice to see you at that event. Maybe we coulda roped you in to draw some spider-man doodles for the kids (and for me too!).

Kyu: thanks, Q. It was great hanging out with you and catching up too, buddy. Yeah, lets do it again soon.

RLS: Thanks, Ron. You have Brian Mclachlan to thank for the script. And he's usually full of funny.

Jason: thank, Jason!

Yep, I tried emailing them.
Here's what they had to say,

"Sorry, we arent' sending out copies of the FCBD book. Eventually, it will be
downloadable. (can't say when, we only just put up the last book)"

:(

That blows! If you email me your mailing address, buddy, I'll send out a copy to you.

That's a funny little bit. Drawing's aces as usual. I too missed it but at least I got to see it here. Thanks Mike!

Thanks, Don! Nice to hear from you again. Sorry you missed out on it -- but I'm sure you can find a copy of it at a comic store near you. Or you can pick it up from the beguiling next time you're in Toronto.

Beautiful stuff.

But I'd love to see more of the comics you're writing as well. The four pager you posted previously with the children running around in the night was really great.

Thanks, Zeno. I'm actually hard at work right now on a graphic novel of short stories that I'm both writing and drawing. They're all similar in approach to that previous story, "Night Time" that I posted here. Right now, its planned as a book of 5 short stories, each about 30 pages in length. I'm very excited about the book and it's "my baby" as it were, but its taking a long time to do since I also have to complete illustration assignments and such as well.

Hopefully, I should be able to share a few pages once I get closer to completion.

Doodlers: Thanks, guys! I really enjoyed meeting you at last at the FCBD event. Hope you had a good time as well and got some nice comics out of it too.

Jason: thanks, Jason. Glad you liked the sketch -- it was the last one of the day so I was worried it might have been a bit wonky. Hope you had a good time at FCBD too -- looks to me you got some excellent sketches from all the other artists that donated their time!
