X-men First Class!

Sorry for the long delay in posting, folks. I've just been very tied up with work and family lately and my poor blog is getting neglected (geez, I say that so often its getting to be a broken record). Anyway, one of my recent fun assignments was a 5 page story I drew for Marvel's X-men First Class comic. It's for their upcoming Halloween Special, which should come out in (duh) October. The writer of XFC, jazzy Jeff Parker, was gracious enough to let me draw something for his book and even let me draw it in my regular two-tone style, which was a real treat. Aside from being a fun sci-fi-homage-based script, the story was also special to me as it was an opportunity to draw Cyclops -- my all time favourite X-man (I'm not kidding, as you can see here).

I've drawn the original X-men before, as a poster, but you can check out page 1 of this story above and let me know what you think.

This is...well, Uncanny, Mike. Great job. The original X-Men were always my favorite super-team and you've really done them justice. As always, I really dig your linework, composition and use of black. Your unique, classy coloring style really adds a nice touch as well. This is going to be a great story.

I already have the issue on order and can't wait to read it!

Well then it's also a chance for me to see you draw my all-time favorite X-man, old school Beast. Looks great Mike, glad you got to use the two-tone style. Looking forward to seeing this in print.

Wow, that page is fantastic. So classy (oh just noticed: ditto Dan C - good call). A great breather from the house style of a lot of superhero comics these days. There's a bit of a vintage Wally Wood sci-fi vibe to those clean inks.
And the poster ad Cyclops images are great too!

Wicked. The fact that Marvel is diggin' the Cho gives me hope that things there aren't quite as depressing as I thought.

Well done, as always.

Michael...these are incredible. I'd really like to be picking up a regular title like this from you! A graphic novel perhaps? Pretty please?

Dan: thanks, Dan. I could say the same about your stuff...

Doc shaner: thanks, Evan. Hope you're keeping well and busy.

Alan: thanks, Alan. Yeah, I'm a big Wally Wood fan, so I'm sure that's influenced the way I treat spaceships and such.

Matthew: hey, buddy! Nice to hear from you -- hope that signing went well at the Beguiling!

Jason: thanks, Jason. Though, this will probably be my last 'mainstream' assignment for a a few months.

Chris: thanks, Chris. Yes, it was a lot of fun to do -- I mean, it was only 5 pages, so there wasn't really any room to stress over anything.

Kyu: Hey, buddy! Nice to hear from you.

Scott: thanks, Scott. Hope all is well with you and the family.

Gerry: thanks, Gerry.

Bobby Nash: thanks, Bobby.

Paul: Thanks, Paul. I'm trying, buddy. I'm trying...

Michael,

You are beyond amazing, and I'm sure you'll win over so many people (and companies) with your work that I dread the day that you are so busy that you won't be able to update your blog.
Best of luck in your soon to be busy-as-all-get-out future!

hey Mike! This was a great post. It's kind of scary because I swear, the other day, I had a vision of you drawing the original X-Men in their original costumes, and then you go and post that you're doing a short X-Men story in those same costumes!

It was nice seeing you the other day.

ullo, michael. damn! i have to buy another MARVEL comic, that's 6 this year!
LOVE what you do, you've a very seductive style, retro, yet fresh, with weight and mood and charm. and with the minimal colour palette, your X-MEN wins over all those garish and overworked superhero books. a real inspiration and pleasure to visit your blog.
cheers, shane.

Glad to see your style will be on display in this book Mike!

I still remember seeing your poster at TCAF and thinking it was one of the best X-illustrations that I had seen in a long time.

Looking forward to more.

Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen. I'm flattered you liked my two-tone treatment of the original x-men. The story was a blast to draw.
