Anyway, these days, I usually turn down assignments where I'm asked to caricaturize someone. I leave that for the pros. But to give you an idea how bad I am, take a look at a couple of old illustrations I did for Canadian Business Magazine. These two were drawn several years ago, but I still cringe when I see them.
First up is Bill Gates as a tupperware saleslady (don't ask, just buy it). Honestly, this one's so bad I had to put a frikkin nametag on him just to sell the likeness!

Next is that lovable cutie-pie, Alan Greenspan -- the big financial muckity-muck. I think this one's a bit better, but its still pretty stiff.

Oh, come on Mike, I didn't think they were all that bad!
BTW congrats to you and Claudia.

not as bad you might think.
both faces are not exatly household names or easy to draw but since you told me who they were i see the resemblance.
besides you're too damn good at drawing everything else!! no need to hog up the talent pool! haha!
You're definitely not giving yourself enough credit. Those pictures were really good...
But by the look of your art style, you excel at so much more, so you shouldn't be that hard on yourself
You know Mike,
What I've learned, is that there is no one way to caricature someone. I think it all depends on what you are trying to convey in your drawing.
Pete Emslie is a teacher of mine whose caricature work I think is great. However If you were to ask him to do a sketch for a political cartoon, I would say his approach and style wouldn't reflect the tone you'd expect in something like that.
check out his blog here to get a better idea of what I mean.

I think you're caricature work is pretty damn good and you should explore your capabilities.
Keep at it!

Mmm, maybe the Gates isn't an amazing likeness. The drawings are great though. And you're comparing yourself to a real talent for it in Mr Wahl. Cool of you to share your humility on the blog.
I love the Greenspan one! Great stuff. And a big congratulations!
Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement, folks. I'm glad some of you thought the results weren't so bad. I'm still gonna avoid doing caricatures for now though :)
I still think you could pull off a Stallone!
