These are three more quick sketches I did, as pre-fan-expo commissions. Like the others (see a couple posts below), they were done on 9" x 12" bristol, in gouache and ink. I'm sure you can recognize 2 of the super-heroes depicted, but the fellow with the plunger on his head might be a bit obscure. Apparently, his name is Herbie the Fat Fury -- a character from a comic I was completely unfamiliar with. Needless to say, I needed some reference to draw that one.

the cap rocks
I agree, love the Cap. A great moment to draw.
Yes indeed, that Cap drawing is amazing. Great job Mike.
I LOVE the Captain America piece!
Wonderful work all around.
The shadows in the Dare Devil piece are really dramatic.
These are all so great, but I have to pick the Fat Fury as my favorite. Because obviously if I don't I'll get bopped with this here lollipop.
Those are all amazing. I can't stop looking at the Captain America one.
Let me jump on the bandwagon and say that the Captain America is really awesome.
I love the Captain America! I mean, its horrible, give it to me! :-P
I also am strangely attracted to the Fat Fury piece. Have no idea who the dude is, but I like the composition of the arms and the plunger on head can't hurt his manliness!
Daredevil รจ fantastico.
Complimenti.
Just wanted to say I luv my Ironman print (FanExpo this past weekend). Yay for narcisisstic, flawed superheroes!
thx again your style is refreshing edgy and unique
Rian... (not Ryan I'm a chick :-P)
That frozen Cap fish is quite the intense little denizen of the deep. And great job on the Fat Fury, I certainly would have thought you a long-time fan just from looking at it. Definite kudos, all-round.
awesome as always. don't remember posing for that third one....
dd is my fave of the three. but that cap is cool to. i like that peeking fish coming out the side.
Without question, Fat Fury is true elegance.
just found your blog. great work!
Thanks, everyone. I enjoyed drawing that Captain America one too. I actually find drawing Cap pretty fun to do -- I think I drew like, 10 sketches of him at the Fan Expo show.
Rian: Glad you liked your print, Rian. I remember meeting you and hearing about how much you Iron Man because he's "a bit of a dick". LOL.
Love that Fat Fury drawing! If you were born after 1970 you probably won't know who he is (was?), but his comic was one of the funniest (and best drawn) ones ever. I wish they'd bring him back. Or at the least reprint his stories.
Bob Canada, rejoice, for Dark Horse has recently reprinted all of the Herbie comics (including his appearances as the Fat Fury) in 3 hardcover volumes! I certainly agree with you that Ogden Whitney did a great job of creating the right mood with his fine artwork in the series. In my opinion though, Michael Cho has created the best image ever of young Mr. Popnecker, and I am more than a little pleased that I asked him to do so. Thanks again Michael!
