Bill Russell - the greatest Celtic of all time

As some of you may know, I'm a basketball nut. I'm the kind of fan that follows NBA teams even during the off-season: reading about trades, personnel changes, summer league games and obsessive things like that. So, with the new season almost about to jump off, here's a recent portrait I did of Bill Russell - the anchor of some of the greatest Boston Celtic teams of all time.

I drew this one up as a commission - one I was glad to do. It was painted in markers and ink, with a few white highlights painted in gouache. The image was referenced from a photograph of a young Russ from the Sports Illustrated archives.

Nice, Michael. Big NBA fan here as well. (I follow during the offseason as well.) Go Spurs!

Brian: thanks, Brian. Nice to hear from a fellow hoops nut -- I'm betting the Spurs go pretty far this year: picking up Richard Jefferson was a great move, and makes up a bit for the fact that Duncan and Ginobli are getting older and have a lot of mileage on them.

Vee: thanks, Vee.

Kyle: thanks, Kyle. Nice to hear from you.

Michael, Big Celts fan and I love it both for the subject and the artistic execution.

As for the Russell and Cousy debate, they were both driven, committed players who were willing to sacrifice personal numbers to play their roles in Red's system.

First and foremost, the 1960's Celts were at T-E-A-M, Team, and a lot of today's NBA teams playing man on man street ball could learn a thing or two or three from those vintage Celtic teams.

Wow! The reflective fabric of the jacket is perfectly done!

Mark: Cousy was cool, but Russ was the anchor, IMHO. Plus, he went beyond cool to me when he became a player/coach.

Brian: Agreed. Though, there have been some great "team-first" squads over the last decade. The 2004 Detroit Pistons come to mind, as well as every year's version of the San Antonio Spurs.

Arkonbey: thanks :)

j.etienne: what? I don't understand what you're referring to. If you're trying to say that I ripped some pics off your blog for a post called "environment test: process 02", no such post exists on my blog.

Oh wait, NOW I see -- you're complaining about a rip on ANOTHER person's blog: cosmicpencil.blogspot.com. Why not contact that blog's author and complain to him? I'm curious why you chose to post that on my blog?

Mike, you're far too nice to these mopes that have no idea what they're talking about.
