The first is for Maisonneuve Magazine, illustrating an article on interesting villains in literature. I chose to go with an illo of my personal pick for most interesting villain: Satan, from Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost:

Next, and in keeping with the biblical theme, is a small spot for the New York Times Book Review, accompanying a write-up on the book "Jesus Boy":

Finally, shifting the focus from religion to money, here's a spot for Briefings Magazine, accompanying an article about Chinese market manipulation of american currency:

Love the first one. Dry brush?
Striking stuff! The satan illustration reminds me of Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now.
Andrea: Thanks - yes, that's drybrush gouache and ink on paper.
Munchanka: Thanks - now that you mention it, it kinda does remind me of Brando in that film. Like a diamond bullet...
@ munchanka:
i thought exactly the same thing about the mike's satan post! dead on brando! funny how the artist (in this case, mike) sees things differently or hadn't seen the brando resemblance until it was pointed out to him.
in any case...great stuff as always mike!
and here i am calling you mike all over the place like i know you personally or something...
an uncouth savage i be!
LOL, I think you've visited my site and commented enough to call me Mike, Jason. All my friends call me Mike.
I love the colors of the Briefings Magazine's illustration! Specially how the same color you used in the chinese guy's face and hands is the same of Uncle Sam's face, hat and tie... Amazing! That's a cool lesson about palette!
Hugs,
Tati
I'm really digging the Maisonneuve illo as well. Nice one.
Thank you both. :)
