Captain America vs. Hydra!

In between editorial illustration assignments, I like to take a break and draw some superheroes. I find it's a great way to loosen up and work out aggression. I painted this one of Captain America in action against those nasty baddies from Hydra (google them if you don't know who they are) the other night for fun. I always seem to enjoy drawing Cap. This is also one of several new paintings I'll be taking with me to sell at the Fan Expo comic-con in Toronto in about a month.

This one was painted fairly large, about 11" x 16", in gouache and ink on watercolour paper. Since it was done in gouache, it needed no pshop cleanup. If you're interested, you can check out my pencil sketch for it below:

Saw the earlier bits on this, wasn't sure how I'd feel without my Hydra in green, but this is really amazing work. No shock there, of course, your stuff is always so expressive... I even love how happy he looks to be smashing baddies.

This is the kind of Cap I really enjoyed, like the one Mark Waid wrote while I was in high school.

I love it! My favorite part is the wing from his cowl popping out of the negative space. You were great at ICON6 btw. I need to get a copy of that book you did about the history of the h-bomb. Great stuff! Very inspiring.

Just stunning. Beautiful, lush inks, brilliant framing and colour choice. Glorious.

Love the sketch as well!

That's great, Michael. How much are you selling the original for?

So awesome! Your action always has so much "oomph" to it.

Awesome as usual. It's amazing to me how much depth and implied color you have with just 1 color, black and white. It's impressive.

I love this piece, in spite of having no history at all with Captain America.

Instead of commenting on the fantastic art, I would just like to say that it's obvious that HYDRA is not subject to OSHA rules. They don't even equip their minions with shatter-resistant ballistic eyewear. I mean, it's not like they even have to buy it, they could just break into a government contractor.

Oh, wait. That's what they were doing when Cap got the jump on them.

Just wondering, what's gonna happen with Papercut? Done?

Thanks, everyone. Sorry for the delay in replying -- it's been a busy summer.

Mike: glad you enjoyed the presentation at ICON6 - it was a real pleasure to attend.

Rob Davis: Thanks, Rob. If you're interested in the piece and want a price, please email me.

Paul: thanks, Paul. Sigh - I don't know, buddy. I'm working on stuff now, but it's taking a while.

Anonymous: Papercut is on permanent hiatus - unfortunately, I just don't have enough hours in the day to devote to it. I'm hoping to start up a new webcomic sometime in the future.
